  • Description - Subject - Steamer Akamai; Original Photo by - From the Emmert drawing made by Paul Emmert in 1853; When Copied - 1950; Data - The Akamai was a small steamer brought from the mainland and put into the Hawaiian service. She had previously been known as the S.B. Wheeler. The Akamai was kept in service about a year, plying between Honolulu and Lahaina, Maui most of the time, occasionally making trips to Kauai, and doing towing at Honolulu Harbor. Her last voyage, September 24, 1854, bound for Maui, nearly ended in disaster, she sprung a leak in heavy seas, and returned to Honolulu to be condemned as un-sea-worthy.
