Nuuanu - Pali

• Series: PPWD • Box #: 12 • Folder #: 6 • Image #: 034 • Title: Nuuanu - Pali • Description: [newspaper article]; Title – Pali Rd. Was Opened 50 Years Ago; Article – Honolulu’s famed Nuuanu Pail Rd. will be 50 years old on Tuesday. Actually, it is a little older for it was completed on Jan. 6, 1898, but it was completed on Jan. 6, 1898, but it was not until Jan. 20 of that year that it was officially opened to traffic. * * * Since that time the scenic highway, which connects Honolulu with Windward Oahu, and is a link in the round-the-island road, has seen many changes, and only recently the thoroughfare was improved by widening and the elimination of some of the curves. John H. Wilson, now mayor of Honolulu, and then a student at Stanford, and the late Lou M. Whitehouse contracted to do the work for $37,500. Ground was broken on May 26, 1897, and the job was completed on Jan. 3, 1898. A total of 7,600 feet of road was constructed on a bench 20 feet wide. The right-of-way was 16 feet wide, macadamized along its entire length. * * * As Mayor of Honolulu, Mr. Wilson last year approved the plans which led to the widening of the road he built many years ago. He also has given his tentative approval to a proposed highway with a tunnel up the Kalihi valley and through the Koolau mountains to Kaneohe and Kailua. A second route for such a highway and tunnel along Nuuanu valley also has been proposed. The Nuuanu Pali Rd. was started and finished during the Republic of Hawaii, of which the late Sanford Ballard Dole, first governor of the Territory of Hawaii, was president. On Aug. 12, 1898 the American flag was raised over Iolani Palace in Honolulu. * * * On Jan. 20, 1898, an item in the Pacific Commercial Advertiser said: “Minister King and Attorney-General Smith made a trip over the Pali on the new road yesterday. They took an ordinary livery rig and agreed that the drive was enjoyable in the extreme. Capt. King says the new road is one of the best and easiest-graded throughfares in the Islands and will be all rights for teams and loads. A few more days will complete the fence and then the contractors will formally turn the road over to the government.” Photo Caption – When the Nuuanau Pali Rd. Opened – This historic photo, taken 50 years ago, shows the opening of the famed Nuuanu Pali Rd. , connecting Honolulu with Windward Oahu, on Han. 20. 1898. The highway was completed on Jan .6 of that year. Back in those days there were few automobiles in Honolulu, so the bulk of the traffic over the new highway was with horse-drawn vehicles. The autos, however, were able to make the grade – goggles, linen dusters, hand cranks, and all. • Photo Credit: Williams, James J.
