Two proclamations addressed to all inhabitants of the Hawaiian Kingdom issued at Oahu on July 5, 1832: first one issued by Kinau proclaiming her successorship as Kuhina Nui upon the death of Kaahumanu, and that all the people who occupy the possessions of her mother are hers; the second one issued by Kauikeaouli proclaiming the office held by his Guardian (Kaahumanu) belongs to his mother (Kinau), that he is superior and his mother (Kinau) is subordinate, and that all who enjoyed the lands belonging to his father are to acknowledge him. • Comments: Copy 1 of 3. Best Copy: Copy 2. Scribbled on the bottom of this document are handwritten notes -- and according to this indexer's best guess, states: "This proclamation is of great importance in determining the [ ] and power of Kaahumanu which descended to Kinau, and [ ] in the decision of [ ] in Charltonʻs case [ ] untenable. It is also to be stressed that in the native version the word Kanaka is used". On the back of this document is a lengthy continuation of handwritten notes regarding the use of word Kanaka.
