DECLARATION: Regarding ownership and retention of property.

• Series #: 430 • Box #: 001 • Folder #: 04 • Item #: 001 • Description: Declaration of Lewis Rees to Esq., H.B.M. Consul General William Miller at Honolulu on April 27, 1848 requesting assistance to keep property that was given to him by Manuia who was Chamberlain to King Lunalilo. Rees said that the property in Ewa was given to him in 1828 by Manuia. This property was actually an exchange for property that was previous given to Rees by Manuia, but, according to Rees, was too small for raising cattle. In 1842, dependents of Namau, a member of the Land Commission and a chief, ordered Rees to vacate the Ewa property. Rees writes that he then sought the aid of Dr. Charles Judd who wrote two supporting letters to Namau which barred Rees' expulsion from the property prior to the Land Commission meeting. At that meeting, witnesses for Rees reversed their support for him and Rees claimed that their reversal was due to pressure by Namau. Rees reiterated that Manuia had given him the property and that he was entitled to keep it. This declaration was Rees' attempt to present his case for ownership and his testimony was entered in the Book of Protests (pp 125-133) kept at the British Consulate on May 2, 1848. • Comments: See also P.C.
