Aloha Tower Visitors Book

The management and maintenance of Aloha Tower fell under the aegis of the Board of Harbor Commissioners. This one example remains to reflect that function, and is composed of the names, hometown addresses, and very interesting remarks of visitors to Aloha Tower.

Bookkeeping Records

Documents name of vessel, amount paid for wharfage, pilotage, harbormaster's fees, demurrage, and oil, and date and receipt number of transaction. The Cash Book contains records mostly from Honolulu Harbor, but also includes some information for Hilo, Kahului, and Port Allen.

The 1941-1942 Daily Record of Fees gives dates of entries and clearances in addition to the accounts.

Cargo Statistics

Lists type and value of cargo entries and clearances for Ports of Kahului and Nawiliwili. Vessels are separated into interisland and mainland categories. Included in back are accounts of war emergency expenses by island, from Dec. 7, 1941-July 1942.

Correspondence of the Board of Harbor Commissioners

Correspondence consists of letters exchanged by Chairman of the Board and his clerk with Honolulu and outer island harbormasters, various shipping and engineering firms, Office of the Attorney General, Corps of Engineers, Commissioner of Public Lands, Chamber of Commerce, Office of the Governor, Board of Health, American Association of Port Authorities, etc.

As the responsibility for the safety and cleanliness of the waterways of the Territory fell under the authority of the Board of Harbor Commissioners, correspondence entitled "Lighthouse Service," "Waikiki Beach Patrol," and "Oil Pipelines" are filed within this series.

The 1942-1948 folders found at the end of this series contain negotiations with the Army and Navy concerning back payment for the use of harbor facilities and pilotage services during WWII. The actual annual correspondence, however, concludes in 1945. THERE ARE NO RECORDS OF THE BOMBING OF PEARL HARBOR or any whatsoever for 1941-1942.

Correspondence of the Honolulu Harbormaster

Consists mostly of letters, reports, and personnel information from the Honolulu Harbormaster to the Chairman of the Board or the Administrative Officer. Also contains Report and Minutes of the Maritime Affairs Committee and the Seamen's Institute, statements on quarantine inspection (entitled "Public Health Service"), oil spills, and Harbor Police accident reports.
THERE IS NO INFORMATION PERTAINING TO THE BOMBING OF PEARL HARBOR.

Fishing Boat Records

Registration books of fishing boats, pleasure craft, and sampans. Include names of owners, date and number of registration, length of boats, and pier location. "Mooring Fees" includes the monthly fee paid by each boat. "Registry of Fishing and Pleasure Boats" contains the 1929 Registry of Sampan owners as well (in back). The "Sampan Daily Report" identifies the daily catch of fish in pounds, supplies used, and time of arrival and departure of each sampan.

Minutes of Meetings of the Board of Harbor Commissioners

Contains the minutes of regular meetings and occasional special meetings of the Board. Included are decisions for the authorization of repairs and payment of bills, awarding of contracts and building permits, purchase of land and materials, granting of permission to use piers or waterways for sporting, fund-raising or celebratory events, setting and changing of fees for use of harbor facilities, etc.

Pilotage Records

Contains name of vessel, captain, dates of arrival and departure, where from, nationality, tonnage, draft, weather at time of arrival, pilot's name and remarks. Variously called "Inward and Outward Pilotage Records" (1877-1913), "Pilot's Reports" (1900-1915), and "Pilot's Log" (1915-1929).

The records from 1877-1913 are much less detailed than later ones.
