District Court of the Fifth Circuit Minute Books

Contains proceedings relating to minor civil suits, criminal arraignments, and criminal cases. Criminal cases requiring juries were tried in the circuit court, with initial arraignments in the district court. Minute book entries provide date of court hearing, name of presiding magistrate, minutes to cases heard before the district court magistrate, judgments, fines and sentences. Criminal cases involve public nuisance, drunkenness, gambling, polygamy, adultery, sale of intoxicating drinks, breaking Sabbath, and theft. Contains "haalele hana" cases where indentured agricultural laborers were brought before the district magistrate by plantations for not fulfilling the terms of labor contracts.

The papers in the Curtis Piehu Iuakea Manuscript Collection span the years 1875 through 1969, which includes correspondence and materials published after his death. The collection consists mostly of personal papers and documents of the post-monarchy era, and include material on the Lili'uokalani Trust and Kalanianaole lawsuit against the estate. The collection also includes commissions and awards received by Iaukea during his career from 1875-1917.

First Circuit Court

Correspondence of the third Division. 1895-1896

Routine letters exchanged by the Captain H. C. Austin of the Third Division (Island of Hawaiʻi), the Sheriff of Hawaiʻi island and Marshal A.M. Brown regarding meetings, elections of officers, stores inventories and issuing firearms and ammunition to Third Division squads in Hilo, Pahala and Punaluʻu. Contains a roster of Pahala Company {Division 3, Squad 1).

Correspondence of the Honolulu Harbormaster

Consists mostly of letters, reports, and personnel information from the Honolulu Harbormaster to the Chairman of the Board or the Administrative Officer. Also contains Report and Minutes of the Maritime Affairs Committee and the Seamen's Institute, statements on quarantine inspection (entitled "Public Health Service"), oil spills, and Harbor Police accident reports.

Board of Harbor Commissioners

Correspondence of the Board of Harbor Commissioners

Correspondence consists of letters exchanged by Chairman of the Board and his clerk with Honolulu and outer island harbormasters, various shipping and engineering firms, Office of the Attorney General, Corps of Engineers, Commissioner of Public Lands, Chamber of Commerce, Office of the Governor, Board of Health, American Association of Port Authorities, etc.

As the responsibility for the safety and cleanliness of the waterways of the Territory fell under the authority of the Board of Harbor Commissioners, correspondence entitled "Lighthouse Service," "Waikiki Beach Patrol," and "Oil Pipelines" are filed within this series.

The 1942-1948 folders found at the end of this series contain negotiations with the Army and Navy concerning back payment for the use of harbor facilities and pilotage services during WWII. The actual annual correspondence, however, concludes in 1945. THERE ARE NO RECORDS OF THE BOMBING OF PEARL HARBOR or any whatsoever for 1941-1942.
