History

Mōʻīwahine Liliʻuokalani served as the eighth reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom--second of the Kalākaua line--from 1891-1893. On 17 January 1893, leaders of a coup dʻetat declared an abrogation of the Hawaiian monarchy and the creation of a provisional government for the Hawaiian Islands. A struggle over rule, legitimacy, and assets--both governmental and private—was launched that involved diplomatic and political relations in Hawaiʻi and abroad. Her Hawaiian Majesty Queen Liliʻuokalani passed on 11 November 1917 and was buried at Mauna ʻAla, the Royal Mauseleum of Hawaiʻi in Nuʻanu Valley, Oʻahu.

A full moʻokūʻauhau (genealogy) was published by Liliʻuokalani as an appendix in her 1898 auto-biography that was republished in 2013. Liliuokalani. Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen. Honolulu: Hui Hānai, 2013.

General context

Liliʻuokalani served as the eighth and final ruling monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the years 1891-1893 and fought to retain Her throne and the independence of the Hawaiian Kingdom until the seizure of Hawaiʻi by the United States in 1898. World-wide geo-political changes were taking place including an early struggle to occupy and control the Pacific Ocean that involved Hawaiʻi, the United States, Spain, England, Japan, and several other nations. The materials in this manuscript collection, ordered given to the public archives of Hawaiʻi by Liliʻuokalani Herself, hold tremendous historical and cultural value to Kanaka ʻŌiwi (Native Hawaiians), the people of Hawaiʻi, and the world.
