History

Established: In 1959, following statehood, the executive branch was reorganized and the State Department of Taxation was assigned the function and responsibility of assessing and collecting taxes (Act 1, Second Special Session, Session Laws of Hawaii). The Office of the Director was created within the department along with other divisions/offices to administer the functions of the department.

The Office of the Director of Taxation is responsible for managing the administration and enforcement of the tax laws of the State. This includes assessment of taxes and collection of tax revenues and collection of employment security contributions paid by employers under the Unemployment Compensation Law. The office oversees the development of tax interpretations, studies the provisions of the tax laws, and recommends to the Legislature changes and revisions to those laws.
