Subject - Queen Street, Honolulu in 1857; Original Photo by - From a drawing by G. H. Burgess. When Copied - About 1938; Data - George H. Burgess, artist, was a brother of Edward Burgess, a Honolulu business man. Edward conducted eating places, restaurants, and later bars and saloons. Edward Burgess appears to have been associated with others in the operation of the Royal Hotel, Nuuanu at Merchant street, His last place of business was the Bank Exchange, located on Nuuanu street He died July 24, 1870. George Burgess the artist, and brother of Edward visited Honolulu a number of times. His name appears on the first of the Emmert series of drawing as the engraver. He made drawings, many of them charming, of Honolulu scenes. He was present at the laying of the corner stone of St. Andrew's Cathedral in 1867, made a sketch which was later published. This drawing of Honolulu in 1857 shows the mauka wall of the Old Fort, Queen street looking toward Diamond Head, the Court House, built in 1851, and more distant, Kawaiahao Church.; [from the front]: Diamond-head.
