  • Description - A Memoranda written on October 31, 1848 by William Miller, H.M.'s Consul General for the Islands of the Pacific, reporting on the events and circumstances relating to the murder of the Captain, a crew member, and passenger of the English Schooner "Amelia." On October 3, 1848, en route from Mexico to Hong Kong, Mr. Macnally (captain), Don Ramon Alva (Supercargo), Cayetano Gomez (Boatswain), and Mr. Cooke (passenger) were killed by Mutineers who were subsequently killed the next day before the ship was rerouted to Hawaii. The description of the October 3rd events was drawn up by Thomas Gannon, an English Boy 16 years of age belonging to the Schooner, and was corroborated by Mrs. Cooke, the widow of the deceased passenger. The complete narratives by Thomas Gannon of the mutiny, the retaking of the ship by the crew, the storm off Mexico, and the decision to sale to Hawaii, are included as an appendix to the memoranda. Upon the ship's arrival in Honolulu, Miller went on the ship, gathered information about what happened, and recorded the inventory of currency ($287,684) which was to have been delivered to companies in Hong Kong, including Turner & Co., J.A. Durran (Macao). Because of some obvious storm damage, Miller ordered a survey of the ship and insisted that all repairs had to be completed before the ship could sail to Hong Kong.
