SUBJECT - Merchant Street, looking Waikiki from Nuuanu; Original Photo By - unknown, c. 1892-3; When Copied - 1948; Data - The edge of the Royal Building which stands at the corner of Merchant and Nuuanu streets, at the left in the picture. Next, a warehouse, probably near the site of the Stephen Reynolds store of early Honolulu. The vacant lot with fence, earlier the site of the Sailor's Home, was sold to the Yokohama Specia Bank in 1906 or 1907. The Bank building was opened to the public April 10, 1910. Next - Old Post Office, built in 1870 and first occupied March 1871; Hawaiian Gazette Building and McInerney, the last at the corner of Merchant and Fort Streets. On the right, the Enterprise Carriage Company, Wallace Jackson Manager. This sign bears two telephone numbers, the Mutual and the Bell. These two companies were combined in August, 1894, which suggests that the picture may have been taken about 1892-3. Next is the Police Station of brick, built in 1886. Beyond Kaahumanu Street is the Bishop Bank, built in 1877, and the Campbell Block, built 1883. The Judd Building, not shown at the corner of Fort and Merchant streets, was erected in 1898.
