History

1947-1960 division in the Workmen’s Compensation Bureau of DLIR (Act 64 SLH 1947).
1960-1973 separate division in DLIR (Act 1, 2nd Special Session, 1959, and Governor’s Executive Order no. 1 dated January 5, 1960).

Disestablished: Authorized by Act 57 SLH 1972 and effected by the Governor’s approval on December 3, 1973, of a request by DLIR for organizational change.

Functions, occupations and activities

The division was empowered to:
• Inspect places of employment and machines, devices and apparatus, and equipment for the purpose of ensuring adequate protection to the life and safety of workers;
• Enforce all rules and regulations made by the Director of Labor and Industrial Relations for the protection of life, health and safety of employees;
• Investigate the cause of all industrial injuries resulting in disability or death which occurred in any employment or place of employment and make reasonable orders and recommendations with respect to the cause of the injuries;
• Disseminate through exhibitions, moving pictures, lectures, pamphlets, and any other means of publicity, information to employers, employees and the general public regarding the causes and prevention of industrial accidents;
• Inspect at least semiannually all mechanical or electrically operated devices considered as major rides and used as amusement rides at a carnival, circus, fair, or amusement park for the purpose of protecting the safety of the general public.
