[Taken directly from the NARA series description] These records relate to inquires and complaints concerning public land laws and their administration. Documents relating to land matters constitute about 40 percent of the document because Hawaii was permitted to retain its original land law. About 10 percent of the document relate to inquires concerning the availability of Hawaiian public bonds and their administration. The remaining documents concern such diverse topics as claims for crown lands; establishment of railroads' recall of the coins and currency of the Republic of Hawaii; institution of cable service; regulation of Asiatic immigrants; complaints of corruption in the Territorial government; issuance of passports; regulation of patents, trademarks and copyrights; administration of the Hawaiian National Guard; establishment of the U.S. Experiment Station and the Hawaiian National Park; administration of the public school system; control and suppression of the bubonic plague and leprosy; protection of sea birds on the outward islands of the Hawaiian group; administration of customs duties and ports; liquidation of the Hawaiian Postal Savings Bank; and production of coffee and coca. Also included are inquires and petitions from such groups as the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association, Republican Territorial Central Committee, and the American Settlers Association.
