History

The present agency is the successor of the following entities: the Interior Departments of the Hawaiian Kingdom, the Provisional Government and the Republic of Hawaii; the Territorial Office of the Treasurer and Treasury Department; and following statehood, the Department of Treasury and Regulation. In 1963, the Department of Treasury and Regulation was renamed the Department of Regulatory Agencies (Act 114, SLH).

In 1982, to underscore a shift in emphasis to commerce and consumer concerns, it acquired its current title, the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (Act 20, SLH).
