Law Case Files of the First Circuit Court

Contains case numbers 1 through 3808.
Files for cases 2043 through 2099 were not transferred to the Archives.

In order to adjudicate property claims and to seek monetary compensation in disputes, a plaintiff filed a law case in the circuit court.

Case files generally contain petitions, proceedings, receipts, plaintiff statements, summons, defendant's briefs, evidence, bills of court and attorney costs, decisions, judgments and appeals. Cases involve lower court appeals; claims for monetary compensation in disputes over property damage, wages, loan payments, leases, and rents; disputes over land ownership; ejectment; fishing and water rights. If a case involved property claims, the file may contain information on land titles and family history of plaintiffs and defendants. Appeals from the district or police court contain the lower court records relating to the case.

Legislative Records

Contains the Honolulu board's draft bills for proposed changes to Act 221 along with correspondence, research memos, surveys, reports and recommendations. Subject areas include second injury and rehabilitation programs, broadening of coverage and extension of benefits to employees not previously covered and changing the definition of dependents.

Letterbooks (Outgoing)

Includes letters of the Collector General and the Deputy Collector General to ship owners, government officials and Collectors of Customs at outer island ports. Most discuss accounts, inspection of ships, Customs House conditions and appointments to office. Fifteen of the 21 volumes are letterpress copybooks. Outgoing letters from 1898-1900 are interfiled with Incoming Letters [series 081].

The letters are from various parties to the Collector General, the Collector of Lahaina, and the Collector of Hilo. Most deal with requests for permission to land at specific ports, the delivery of cargo and contract laborers, and the amount of waiver of import duties. A notable exception is the Nov.-Dec. 1858 folder containing detailed accounts of the Honolulu Customs House robbery. There are no records from 1860-1861 or 1885-1886. The files from 1898-1900 include outgoing letters.

Letters Received by the Patents and Miscellaneous Division

[Taken directly from the NARA series description] These records relate to inquires and complaints concerning public land laws and their administration. Documents relating to land matters constitute about 40 percent of the document because Hawaii was permitted to retain its original land law. About 10 percent of the document relate to inquires concerning the availability of Hawaiian public bonds and their administration. The remaining documents concern such diverse topics as claims for crown lands; establishment of railroads' recall of the coins and currency of the Republic of Hawaii; institution of cable service; regulation of Asiatic immigrants; complaints of corruption in the Territorial government; issuance of passports; regulation of patents, trademarks and copyrights; administration of the Hawaiian National Guard; establishment of the U.S. Experiment Station and the Hawaiian National Park; administration of the public school system; control and suppression of the bubonic plague and leprosy; protection of sea birds on the outward islands of the Hawaiian group; administration of customs duties and ports; liquidation of the Hawaiian Postal Savings Bank; and production of coffee and coca. Also included are inquires and petitions from such groups as the Hawaiian Sugar Planters Association, Republican Territorial Central Committee, and the American Settlers Association.

This manuscript series contains a wide range of documents covering the political, economic, and social life of Hawaiʻi's last reigning sovereign, Mōʻīwahine Liliʻuokalani from her birth till two years after her death. Also included in the collection are materials from her husband John Owed Dominis and his family.

This M93 sub-series contains a wide range of documents including a group of correspondence, with an earlier artificial arrangement by the Archives, that is assigned numbers 1-589. In addition to this set are calling cards, invitations, visitor books, scrapbooks, and an early draft manuscript of "Hawaiiʻs Story by Hawaiiaʻs Queen" with the draft title "Variegated Leaves." The sub-series makes up the core body of the M93 series and offers materials documenting the life of Hawaiʻi's eighth ruling monarch and first ruling Queen, Her Majesty Queen Liliʻuokalani.
